College Canteens – Healthy Eating Policy
To help combat rising child health issues in South Australian schools and preschools, the SA Government is now focusing on school tuck shops as a medium for providing children with healthy food choices and education.
This year, the College Canteens will be implementing the Government of SA ‘Right Bite’ school Tuck Shop guidelines. These guidelines form part of the SA government program which aims to phase ‘junk food’ out of school tuck shops.
The College’s Canteen menus have been re-designed for 2008 and now include a colour coding system which will assist parents and students in selecting their eating choices. Menus with the new colour coding are on prominent display in each Campus canteen:
GREEN foods are those that are ‘Eat Most’ foods. Such foods include wholegrain breads and cereals, fruit, legumes and vegetables, reduced fat dairy, lean meats and water as the beverage of choice.
AMBER foods are considered as ‘Eat Moderately’ foods. These foods will be offered in small serve sizes in the Canteen and include full cream dairy foods, processed meats, snack bars and biscuits, spreads and sauces, ice creams and desert foods.
RED foods are less nutritious. Such foods are high in fat, salt and sugar providing little nourishment for your child. Some foods in this category may be served in limited amounts / periods.
Pedare will continue to monitor and review its canteen menu selections to ensure that the College is offering a healthier foods menu that meets the needs of the Pedare community.
PLEASE NOTE: Customers with food allergies or concerns about any ingredients of their order should discuss them with the Canteen Staff before they order.
