On Thursday, 21 September, we celebrated Foundation Day. Our College was founded upon the vision of our local Anglican and Uniting Churches to create a school that supports students to develop a lifelong love of learning, a vision we remain firmly committed to today.

At our Foundation Day Assembly, we welcomed Pedare’s founding Principal, Geoff Catford, and his wife, Jan, as we reflected on stories, images and anecdotes from the College’s earliest years. Mr Catford joined long-standing staff member Ingrid Moodley and Year 12 student Will T on stage, where they shared very personal recounts of their time at Pedare. What resonated throughout all their reflections was the consistent experience of a community where God’s love for us is reflected in our care for each other. 

As a community, our love for each other is demonstrated when we put other people’s needs ahead of our own. When we interact with each other kindly, respectfully, patiently, compassionately and justly. And on Foundation Day, we reflected again on the imperative of ensuring that this love for each other does indeed remain the foundation upon which everything in our community is built. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13) 

Foundation Day Assembly and College Dash – Thursday, 21 September

Congratulations to all music students and staff who contributed to Pedare’s Music Showcase last week. The event was a celebration of our bands and ensembles, all of whom performed exceptionally well. The night was very well supported, and it was wonderful to celebrate our beginning musicians alongside our most accomplished senior performers. Thank you, and well done to all involved. 

Year 3-12 Music Showcase – Wednesday, 20 September

My thanks to all staff, students and community members for your contributions to a very successful Term Three. Please keep our Year 12s and their families in your thoughts and prayers as they approach the very final leg of their schooling journey. We very much look forward to the celebrations marking their time at Pedare in the early part of Term 4. 

I hope the upcoming term break provides an opportunity for you all to spend some quality time with family, and we very much look forward to welcoming students and staff back to commence Term Four on Monday, 16 October.

As another term closes, I find myself reflecting on Term 3.

Our students have continued to immerse themselves in a wide range of activities that complement their academic program. They have camped, kayaked, debated, run, jumped, swum, completed an array of sporting activities, sung, acted – you name it, they’ve done it. Students have participated in poetry, story writing and Mathematics/Science competitions and continued to raise money for various charities and groups. We have celebrated Languages, Arts and Science Weeks, and of course, a colourful Book Week. We held our very first Community Dinners, Art and Music Showcases and The Addams Family Musical; no matter the activity, our students’ commitment and dedication to whatever they apply themselves to is to be congratulated along with their willingness to think beyond self and others amongst the outstanding attributes of a Pedare student. 

Term 3, 2023 Highlights

When you reflect on the busyness of the last ten weeks, it is important that we allow ourselves time to rest, rejuvenate and relax and deliberately schedule this. Please make time to do something for yourself while also challenging yourself to do the thing that perhaps you have been putting off; maybe consciously do something for someone else. No matter the activity, do something different from the regular school routine and take time out to enjoy the Spring weather and sunshine.

Our Year 12 students, during the term break, will be busily preparing for their final weeks at school, including prepping for their final exams. Students will prepare in many ways, and while it is critical to have a revision routine, they are also actively encouraged to schedule time for their health and wellbeing and to empower and prioritise self-care. Research has found that “one in two young people are having trouble with their sleep as a direct result of study stress,” and “by encouraging students to maintain a healthy diet, stay hydrated and get enough sleep, you will help them to better manage their stress.” (Williams, 2023)

There will be time to celebrate our 2023 Year 12 cohorts’ achievements and acknowledge their contributions next term.

Term 3 has also been a time that has continued to highlight our strength as a community. This is one of the many aspects that I love about Pedare; our connection, genuine care for each other and our support for others.

This week, we acknowledged students who have excelled in winter sports and extra-curricular activities, and I would like to congratulate each and every one of our students who have enthusiastically participated in these activities. Our sports program aims to be an educational experience that engages students in valuable learning opportunities. Each week, an impressive number of students proudly represent Pedare. As the term draws to a close, we reflect upon the invaluable opportunities these activities have provided. Our extra-curricular department has done an exceptional job offering our students a diverse range of choices to cater for their ever-changing interests. Thank you to Mrs Tronnolone, Mrs Jarman and Mrs Mayer for the work they have all put in for our Winter season. The summer season is not far away, and we look forward to the summer season of sports and activities. 

For our Year 12 students, the upcoming term break is paramount as they prepare for their final assessments and final SACE exams. Next week, we will be conducting trial exams and study workshops to best prepare our students for their final push to the finish line. The Year 12 journey is a demanding one, and we are so proud of how our students have stayed resilient and persevered through the year. It is essential that they continue to demonstrate the same dedication and determination all the way through their final tasks, and we have every confidence in their ability to excel and achieve their full potential.

The annual Senior School Quiz Night was held on Wednesday, 27 September, in the College Chapel, with a remarkable turnout of 150 students and staff. Participants immersed themselves in the evening’s theme of TV Shows, and it truly was a night filled with fun, knowledge and teamwork. I would like to thank Ms Cameron, Academic Captains Maya and Oliver and our hosts for the evening, Charlie and Adele, who all played a pivotal role in organising this fantastic event. Congratulations to the Gray’s Anatomy team, who came away with the best dressed and the overall win on the night.

Senior School Quiz Night – Wednesday, 27 September

With the changing seasons, we now ask all our students to arrive in Term 4 on Monday, 16 October, wearing the correct summer uniform. Our students look exceptional when they enter the College grounds wearing their uniform well. I’d like to ask for your support to ensure your children return in Term 4 with uniforms that meet College expectations. This might involve updating items after those inevitable growth spurts, replacing or repairing items that are damaged, and considering any changes to hairstyles or piercings. A reminder was given to all students about wearing the College hat when they are outdoors and at all breaks. We also informed students again about our grooming and jewellery expectations, and they are clear on those expectations from day one of next term. We thank you for your support in regard to uniform and grooming.

As we approach the end of Term 3, I’d like to share my thoughts on my initial five weeks here at Pedare. Stepping into the middle of a busy term might have seemed daunting, but the warmth and support extended to me by the staff, students, and families have made it an incredibly welcoming experience. I have enjoyed every opportunity to immerse myself in the community.

Over the past fortnight, there have been numerous activities for our students to engage in beyond the classroom. From chess to basketball, netball, and the Arts and Music Showcases, it has been a joy to see the diverse range of gifts and talents our students possess. These extra-curricular opportunities often provide a greater sense of belonging within our school community.

Year 6-12 Graphic Design and Visual Art Showcase – Wednesday, 20 September

During my initial weeks here, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some of our parents, and it was wonderful to connect with even more of you during the recent Parent Teacher Interviews. These interactions remind us of the importance of collaboration between our College and our families in nurturing students’ growth and development.

As we wrap up this term, I want to congratulate our students on their efforts. Week 9’s theme of perseverance was fitting, as Term 3 can be demanding, and fatigue can take its toll. Many students have shown determination in their efforts to finish the term strongly. Well done!

Thank you for the warm welcome and for making my first five weeks at Pedare so enriching. I am genuinely excited about the journey ahead and the countless opportunities we have to continue nurturing the growth and potential of our students. I eagerly anticipate the experiences that await us in Term 4.

Year 4 Stalls

Year 4 classes sold a variety of items to the Junior School community on Thursday, 28 September. This was part of one of their transdisciplinary Unit of Inquiry that has seen much learning covering many curriculum areas. Over the past few weeks, Year 4 students have been Entrepreneurs inquiring into many aspects of a successful business. This learning has been made relevant with a loan (float) of $20 from the school.  

The International Baccalaureate (IB) and Primary Years Programme (PYP) are perfect vehicles to allow our teachers to present the curriculum in a way that makes the learning relevant, significant, challenging and engaging. Teaching entrepreneurial skills to students is an important area of development for our children.

Such learning provides our students with the knowledge to develop their own businesses. It includes helping them learn about core business areas such as sales, finance, marketing, accountancy and management, as well as broader-ranging skills such as effective communication, adaptability and maintaining confidence.

Teaching economics, business and entrepreneurial skills is important for several reasons:

Preparation for the Modern Economy:

In today’s globalised and rapidly changing world, understanding economic principles and business concepts is essential for students to navigate their future careers and contribute to the economy effectively.

Promoting Financial Literacy:

Teaching economics helps students develop financial literacy skills, enabling them to manage their finances, make informed investment decisions and plan their financial futures.

Fostering Entrepreneurship:

Entrepreneurship is a key driver of innovation, job creation, and economic growth. By teaching entrepreneurial skills, schools empower students to become future business leaders, innovators and job creators.

Real-world Relevance:

Economics and business education provide students practical knowledge and skills to apply to real-life situations. This prepares them to make informed decisions as consumers, employees, and entrepreneurs.

Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving:

Economics and business courses encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students learn to analyse data, evaluate options and make decisions, which are valuable skills in all aspects of life.

International Teacher’s Day

In preparation for International Teacher’s Day, which falls during the School Holidays on Thursday, 5 October, the following poem, in my view, sums up our staff:

One hundred years from now
It won’t matter
What kind of car you drove
What kind of house you lived in
How much money you had in the bank
Nor what clothes you wore
But the world may be a little better
Because you were important in the life of a child

Each and every day, a tremendous amount of trust is placed in the Pedare staff. In response to the question, “What is the most important thing in your life? What do you treasure most, care about and see as vitally important?” 99% of parents will answer, their children! 

More important, significant and treasured to them than their car, their house and even their partner! Not only do you, as parents, place the welfare of the most prized aspect of their life in our hands but we, as teachers, are also charged with educating them and preparing them for the future.

We thank you for that continued trust and the ongoing relationships we form with your child, children and family.

Planet Ark National Tree Day Writing competition

We are excited to announce that two of our Middle School students have taken out both of the top prizes in the recent Planet Ark National Tree Day Writing competition.

Congratulations to Mia F (Year 9) and Natalie P (Year 7) for their achievement. Both girls have won a $500 garden voucher.

ONE+ Titration Competition

On Monday, 25 September, four Stage 1 Chemistry students Annabel K, Silvana V, Felicity S and Eleanor S, competed in the ONE+ Titration Competition against Golden Grove High School and Gleeson College students. Each student performed two sets of acid-base titrations in order to determine the unknown concentration of a weak acid in a solution that was provided to them. We are pleased to announce that Pedare students Annabel K and Silvana V tied for second place. It was a very close competition with only 0.05 difference between the top 4 results. Well done Annabel and Silvana!

Australian Geography Competition

In mid-May, a number of Middle and Senior School students participated in the Australian Geography Competition, which was held online for the first time in 2023. Adelaide Oval and Central Market Excursion

Stage 1 Business Innovation and Stage 1 Tourism

On Thursday, 14 September, Stage 1 Business Innovation and Stage 1 Tourism students ventured into the CBD, visiting two iconic South Australian landmarks: Adelaide Oval and Adelaide Central Market.

The day commenced with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Adelaide Oval, offering students a deep dive into its multifaceted business operations. This provided a unique opportunity to examine how the renowned venue has innovatively adapted and evolved over the years. Students explored how it operates not only as a world-renowned sporting destination but also as a dynamic tourism attraction, including climbing up and into the heritage-listed scoreboard.

Following a brief stroll through Adelaide’s bustling city centre, the students then made their way to the Adelaide Central Market. Here, they delved into the intricacies of Adelaide’s vibrant food and beverage sector. For Business Innovation students, the experience served as an invaluable learning opportunity, allowing them to investigate and validate the business models they have been developing in the classroom. From a Tourism standpoint, the markets were examined as one of Adelaide’s most visited tourist attractions, exploring the range of ways it caters to the culinary and cultural tourism market.

Surveying SA Incursion

Stage 1 Specialist Mathematics

On Monday, 25 September, the Stage 1 Specialist Mathematics students experienced a One+ Incursion run by Surveying SA. Students listened to a presentation about what a surveyor does, different types of surveyors, how surveying is used in everyday life and how 3D Laser Scanning is used in surveying. 

Following the presentation, students took part in some hands-on activities where they used surveying equipment to calculate the length of Shot Put and used Rover and Base Receivers to find hidden objects on the oval.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience and learning about surveying as a career.

Adelaide University Excursion

Year 9 STEM

On Wednesday, 27 September, Year 9 STEM students, along with students from Golden Grove High School, ventured into the North Terrace campus of Adelaide University to take part in the Energy, Mining and Resources Outreach Program. The students participated in various workshops such as Crater Chaos on Mars, Geophysics – Measuring Gravity, Experimenting with Porosity, Exploring Mining and Extraction and a STEM Yellow Brick Road to finish off the day. A highlight for all was experiencing an anechoic chamber, or quiet room, which is a room designed to have no echo at all!

Stage 2 Material Resource Solution Course

As the 2023 Stage 2 Material Resource Solution course comes closer to completion, I would like to share some of the major projects that our students are currently undertaking in the One+ workshops.

Breeanna L’s Major Project Progress

Breeanna L (Year 12) is on the verge of completing her personal workstation/desk. Breeanna is a creative individual who always has an ongoing project. She has chosen to craft a workstation for her home to facilitate her creative endeavours.

Joshua R’s Major Project Progress

Joshua R (Year 12) is in the process of creating an epoxy resin inlay table with tubular steel frame legs, effectively turning it into a tall coffee table. His journey began with thorough research into the manufacturing techniques required for this project. Joshua acquired exceptional oak timber and the epoxy resin required for the project. He then fashioned a casting mould using a plastic laminate board for the project. The timber was placed in, and the stained blue epoxy resin was poured into the mould and left for a week to set. Following this, he removed the mould and prepared it for machining on both sides in readiness for the next phase of his project.

VEX Tournament at Tonsley Innovation District

The Pedare VEX season celebrated a fantastic first tournament at the Tonsley Innovation District on Friday, 15 September.

Over 300 students from 18 schools attended, including Pedare teams from our VEX IQ Middle School and VRC Middle and High School. Together, we celebrated a season filled with prototyping, design, engineering, construction and programming, all while collaborating with other teams in this season’s game.

VEX is a program that challenges students to work as a team with minimal adult support, in line with the program’s Student-Centered Policy. It promotes a “fail often, fail fast” philosophy, aiming to cultivate resilience in students, encouraging them to continuously iterate, learn from their mistakes and tackle new challenges head-on.

Well done to all our teams listed below, who have secured their place in the Golden Grove Regional Championships next term, an event that Pedare has proudly hosted since 2018. Our youngest competitors, the VEX IQ Elementary teams, will also be participating in the competitions.

Tea Tree Gully Inter Schools Volleyball Cup

Congratulations to the Year 9 Volleyball team, known as ‘The Best’, for their recent victory in winning the Year 9 division of the Tea Tree Gully Inter Schools Volleyball Cup. These matches took place on Wednesday lunchtimes at the Golden Grove Recreation Centre, where they competed against Golden Grove and Gleeson College. Congratulations to all involved!

Winter Netball Season

The Winter Netball season at SADNA concluded with 11 Pedare teams showcasing their excellent skills and sportsmanship. Our youngest netballers, the Sub Primary teams, ended with a round-robin carnival, which was full of delight and a great opportunity to play many games in a row with extended exposure. Five teams made it to the finals, with the Intermediate team successfully winning their Grand Final. Congratulations to Charli Z (Year 5) for receiving the Best and Fairest Award for the Primary 2 division. Thank you to all coaches, players and supporters for another magnificent season! 




Tea Tree Gully Anglican


Tea Tree Gully Anglican Church is a group of Christians who seek to serve Jesus in everything we do. Whether you are just visiting or looking for a Christian home, we aim to be a loving and supportive family for you. We meet at the church at 8.30 am, 10.00 am, and 6.00 pm in person. Gully Church (Tea Tree Gully Uniting) – Banksia Markets


Gully Church hosts the ‘local and friendly’ Banksia Markets on the first Saturday of each month from 8.30 am to 1.00 pm at 600 Milne Road, Banksia Park. Stalls inside the hall and in the car park include produce, fresh fruit and vegetables, jewellery, tools, bric-à-brac and lots more.

Golden Grove Uniting Church


Golden Grove Uniting Church, corner of Crouch and One Tree Hill Road, Golden Grove, has a traditional service at 10 am on a Sunday.  Also, on the second and fourth Sunday of the month, we have a cafe-style church, a relaxed contemporary worship service at 6 pm in the Church hall.

Café Youth is a fun, interactive program for young people ages 14 and up looking to engage in topics of faith. Café Youth sessions start with a fun 30-minute activity based on the theme for the night, then followed by “Talk Time”, during which the group discusses a topic of faith while enjoying delicious snacks, refreshments and pizza! The cost for each session is $5.
