Year 9 Biomes & Food Security Unit

Categories: Featured |

Year 9 students have been focusing on Biomes & Food Security as part of their Humanities unit. They’ve been studying the different types of biomes around the world, the food grown in these biomes and how climate impacts food production. Students were lucky enough to hear from Emily Shipway, owner of Lenswood Pick Your Own (an apple orchard in the Adelaide Hills). She discussed with students the intricate process of producing apples, and the realities for farmers around sustainable practices.

To reinforce their learning, students undertook fieldwork on Pedare grounds. They completed a field sketch, an analysis of our sustainability (scoring on a scale from +2 to -2), noted weather conditions and completed a soil test in the vegetable garden. All of this data has aided students in their summative reports, helping them to recognise ways in which South Australia can have greater food security. Thank you to Emily for her wonderful presentation, and Year 9 teachers who helped with the presentation and fieldwork.
